A group of seven alleged members of German far-left organization face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
