The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
