Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
