2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Transition Follows Mixed Reception
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a more defined direction.
The president expressed that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Key Acquisitions
The news mirrors a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.
Here is the complete content from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just completed your meeting - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last fall’s the game playtest was enlightening. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a sharper identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the feedback to mind and reimagined the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its ambition to our fans.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. Following some time of discussions, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and experience in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having devoted the last 15 years creating and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving Ben next week. We are all eager to persist observing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.
The President
Background of the New Head
The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Vision
Project Ethos was revealed in last year alongside a public demo. Then, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Challenge the opponents with fresh skills, risks, and challenges that evolve every session. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The decision is yours."
The game lacks an announced launch window or supported systems, but players can look forward to more updates as production advances.
