The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president started showing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom two times larger of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis forecast his energy policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have conceived – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with federal agencies.
We moved from 'the humble will receive the world' to 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of hostility who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment within America could have minimal awareness of him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; however I believe that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.
It is decidedly definitely not the narrative of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message concerns compassion for others, specifically for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your jacket you should give him your sweater also.
The evident and direct reality that the Jesus from scripture advocates for a kind of radical love concentrated on the impoverished is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness demanding to be restrained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump arise during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to turn out in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We shall require to maintain it, and with identical determination, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you welcome them and welcome him or refuse?
America is best defended, in other words, through connection to the best in US heritage, just as Christianity is best defended by relationship to that which renders it distinctive and beautiful, specifically the model of the Savior. In both situations does it imply acting as if the worst of both America and Christianity was nonexistent; it represents both modesty and belief, a combination that serious American Christians should embrace.
